How To Install Linux Bash Terminal On Windows 10

Today in this tutorial post, I will be showing you how to install Linux Bash Terminal on Windows 10.

You might need to install Linux Bash Terminal on Windows 10, if you run Windows on your PC or laptop, but you develop for Linux as your job at work.

Step One

Settings Start Menu Windows 10

First click on the Windows Start menu, then type settings in the search box at the bottom of the menu. Then click on the Settings option that has just been displayed, to open the Windows Settings screen.

This is the Windows Settings screen. As you can see there are many settings options to choose from. We are going to choose update & security from the options that are shown.

This is the Windows update & security screen, from in here we are going to select the for developers option, once that has been selected, select the developer mode option under the use developer features section.

This will install the developer mode package, that is required to use the feature of Windows 10.

Step Two

Now click on the Windows Update option on the left hand side of the windows. Then click check for updates. Windows will find and update any of it’s software that needs updating. please wait for the updates to be downloaded and installed on your system. If a restart is required please restart your system when prompted.

Step Three

Once your system has restarted, click the windows start button, then type control in the search box. this will search for the control panel. Now click on the control panel application.

This is what the control panel looks like. We as now going to click on the Programs option at the bottom of the first row to options.

This is the programs window, in here we are able to turn software feature on or off. this is what we are now going to do. so please click on the Turn Windows features on or off.

Step Four

This is the Windows Features list of additional software features that are available in Windows 10.

Please click on the check box Windows Subsystem for Linux (Bata). Then click on OK to save the new option that has been selected.

Now click on restart now so the new windows feature will take affect.

Step Five

Start Menu Bash Terminal Option

Once the PC has finished restarting. Click the windows start menu button or the windows on your keyboard, to bring up the start menu.

Now type bash in the search box at the bottom of the menu to run the bash terminal command, so the bash terminal will start running.

Step Six

As you can see the bash.exe program is now running in the terminal. To accept the installation prompt message just type “y” then press the return key on your keyboard.

Step Seven

Ubuntu Bash been downloaded from the windows store

Ubuntu Bash is now been downloaded from the windows store.

Step Eight

Ubuntu filesystem been extracted

The Ubuntu bash filesystem is now been extracted.

Step Nine

Enter UNIX username

Now enter a new UNIX username for your bash terminal sessions.

Step Ten

Enter UNIX password

Now enter a new UNIX password for your bash terminal sessions.

Step Eleven

UNIX account has now been created

Your UNIX account has now been created and it is ready to use.

Step Twelve

Bash on Ubuntu on Windows

Now to run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows, click on the start menu button, then type Ubuntu in the start menu search box. the click on .

Step Thirteen

As you can see the Bash on Ubuntu on Windows is now running successfully in the terminal.

Step Fourteen

As you can see Ubuntu apt-get command is now running in the terminal. Bash is fully set-up a ready to use you can run all bash commands in the terminal just like you would on a native Ubuntu Linux install on a PC or Laptop.

That’s it you have now successfully got Ubuntu Bash running on Windows 10.

How To Install Microsoft PowerShell On Ubuntu Linux

Today in this tutorial post, I will be showing you how to install Microsoft PowerShell on Ubuntu Linux.

You might need to install Microsoft PowerShell on Ubuntu Linux, if you run Linux on your PC or laptop, but you develop for Microsoft Windows as your job at work.

Step One

PowerShell GitHub Page

PowerShell GitHub Download Links

First please visit the PowerShell GitHub page to download the appropriate latest version of the software, for the Linux distribution that you are running.

Step Two

Ubuntu Debian Package Download

I have selected to download the  powershell_6.0.0-alpha.9-1ubuntu1.16.04.1_amd64.deb. This is because I am running Ubuntu MATE 16.04.

Step Three

The Debian package has now finished downloading. The package will be saved in your downloads folder by default.

Step Four

Now I am going to open a MATE termainal window, Just click on Applications > System Tools >  MATE Termainal, or just press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard to open a new terminal window.

The Ubuntu MATE termainal window is now open and ready to have commands ran with inside it.

sudo apt-get install libunwind8 libicu55 command

Now type the following command below into the termainal to install the libunwind8 and libicu55 software librarys.

sudo apt-get install libunwind8 libicu55

Step Six

sudo apt-get install libunwind8 libicu55 install warning

Here is the install warning message that is displayed when installing new software through the terminal. type the letter Y to accept the warning, then press the return key on the keyboard.

sudo apt-get install libunwind8 libicu55 installed

The libunwind8 and libicu55 software librarys have been successfully installed.

Step Seven

Home Folder

Now open your home folder to navigate to the downloads folder.

Now that we are inside our downloads folder double click on the powershell_6.0.0-alpha.9-1ubuntu1.16.04.1_amd64.deb package folder, to install the package file.

Step Eight

Debian Package Installer

Now that the package installer has opened, just click on the Install Package button on the top right hand corner of the window.

Step Nine

Administrative Rights To Install Software

This is the administrative rights to install software message, that is displayed after you have clicked on the install package button. Click OK at to accept the warning.

Step Ten

Debian Package Installer Is Running

The Debian Package installer is now running. Click on close when the installation has finished successfully.

Step Eleven

Now I am going to open a MATE termainal window again, Just click on Applications > System Tools >  MATE , or just press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard to open a new Terminal window.

PowerShell Termainal

Once the terminal has opened type

sudo powershell

This will start-up an instance of Microsoft’s PowerShell within the terminal session.

That’s it you have now successfully got Microsoft’s PowerShell running in Ubuntu Linux.

Windows 10 How To Disable Cortana For Pro & Enterprise Users

Today in this tutorial post, I will be showing you how to disable Cortana in Windows 10.

Step One

First click on Search Windows box that is shown on the task bar.

Search for gpedit.msc in the Search Windows box.

As you can see the Local Group Policy Editor has now opened. This is where we will find the Cortana settings, and  disable the voice search feature in Windows 10.

First drop down the Windows Components Option in the folders tree.

Now scroll down to the search folder option within the Windows Components section. Then click on Allow Cortana to highlight the settings option.

Now right click on Allow Cortana settings option and then click on Edit, then Allow Cortana settings window will open.

The Allow Cortana settings window is now open. As you can see the default setting for the software feature is set to Not Configured.

I have now clicked on Disabled to turn off the Cortana feature within Windows 10’s search function.

Now click on the Apply and OK buttons at the bottom right of the window, to apply the settings changes.

Now restart Windows so the new settings can take effect, by clicking on the Start Button, then Power and then Restart.

Once you have restarted Windows, you will now notice that, when you click in the Search Windows box, it’s appearance has changed from the screenshot that is shown in the first step of this tutorial. This is an indication that Cortana has successfully been disabled.

Disable Cortana Using The Registry Editor

Step One

First click on the start button and then type regedit in the search box. Then click on the regedit icon when it’s show in the menu.

Click yes on the User Account Control window to run the Registry Editor.

This is the Registry Editor Window. Now we will navigate to the following path to disable Cortana.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search.

Step Four

I have now navigated to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search.

Step Five

I have right clicked on the Windows Search option, I then clicked on New, and then DWORD (32-bit) Value.

I am now going to change the name of New Value #1 to Allow Cortana.

Now double click on the new entry, you just created to enter a value, to disable Cortana.

Step Eight

Now type 0 into the Value Data input box. Then click on OK. Then close the Registry Editor Window by clicking on the cross button on the top right of the window.

Finally restart your PC, so all new settings will take affect.
